Alternators
My Garage
The alternator is a crucial component in your Land Rover vehicle's charging system. By converting the engine's mechanical energy into electricity, it's responsible for delivering power to many systems, parts, and accessories.
How Alternators Work
The engine crankshaft takes the vertical motion from the pistons and turns it into rotary motion. That powers a drive belt that's attached to a pulley located on the rotor shaft. The rotor shaft then spins, agitating magnetic coils contained within. The coils create a magnetic field that's then captured by a rectifier as AC power. The rectifier transforms that into the DC power that feeds your battery, wipers, power windows, entertainment system, and more.
Unfortunately, alternators can begin to fail. If that happens, your battery is left as the sole source of electricity. That's going to drain it, and quickly.
How to Spot Alternator Trouble
Signs of failure include:
- Headlights dim or flicker
- Your power windows stop working
- Sound system problems
- Your battery repeatedly dies
- A whining noise coming from the engine<
