The shift knob in your Land Rover or Range Rover is part of its greater shifter, and that shifter is part of the greater transmission system. The shifter is mounted either to the floor or on the steering column, and it goes by several names -- gear knob, gear shift knob, stick shift knob, and gear stick, to name just some of them. What the knob does, though, is pretty simple: it provides a better grip on the stick than just a bare lever, and it displays both the gears you can shift to and the corresponding direction (pattern) to shift in; you grab it, step on the clutch (if your SUV's transmission is manual) and pull the shifter accordingly.
There's plenty more to one, however. It can be made of everything from plastic and metal to carbon fiber, for one. It can also have a cover made of materials like vinyl or leather, and special-edition and other unique variants exist. It can even vary in shape, size, and weight.
