Shocks and Struts
My Garage
The suspension system in your Land Rover model depends on the shocks and struts to manage the activity of the coil springs. When they do their job right, your wheels remain properly aligned, your tires stay connected to the road surface, and you enjoy dependable braking and handling. If they fail to do what they're supposed to your ride quality suffers, and you have greater difficulty driving.
However, shocks and struts are not interchangeable. Shocks are independent, hydraulic components that minimize movement. They're less durable than struts, but easier to replace. Struts are integrated parts in your steering and suspension systems. Since they're weight-bearing, they're typically much stronger than shocks. However, you'll need to make sure and perform an alignment after you replace the struts.
How to Spot Failing Shocks and Struts
Road conditions can eventually cause shock or strut failure, though. Signs of this include:
- Rougher than usual ride quality
- Pulling to one side during a turn
- Tire tread wears unevenly
- Your vehicle leans too far forward when you’re stopping
- There's a greasy film on the shocks or struts
Genuine OEM Shocks or Struts Perform Best
Don't risk driving with bad shocks or struts. It's both unsafe and uncomfortable. When you replace yours, do so in pairs. You'll also want to choose the right ones for your vehicle. That means choosing shocks or struts made by your manufacturer, since they're the only ones that are guaranteed to be compatible.
