Thermostat
My Garage
The thermostat in your Land Rover may be a simple valve with one purpose, but it's still an impressive – and essential – part. In short, a thermostat is responsible for regulating the engine temperature. How it goes about doing that is more intricate, though.
How Your Thermostat Works
A spring or piston opens or closes the thermostat to allow coolant to circulate between your radiator and engine. Keeping the coolant moving at the right time, and in the right direction, allows the thermostat to ensure that your engine runs in an ideal temperature range no matter if the weather is cold or hot.
While thermostat failure is extremely rare, it's not unheard of for one to go bad either due to age or another cause. That puts your engine at risk of overheating, so you'll want to replace a faulty thermostat ASAP.
How to Spot a Failing Thermostat
Signs of trouble include:
- "Check Engine" dash light comes on
- Engine starts overheating
- Engine runs less efficiently
- HVAC issues
