Air Filters

Most Land Rover SUVs come with two air filters in place. One's for your engine, while the second is for the cabin HVAC system. They serve the same purpose as your oil filter and fuel filter in that they're responsible for keeping airborne contaminants out of essential systems and parts.

Your engine air filter is located near your vehicle's air intake, where it can capture pollutants and debris before they make their way to the engine and begin to collect. Without it, the steady flow of air your engine needs for combustion would be impaired – hindering your performance.

Your cabin air filter can be located under the dashboard, under the hood of your vehicle, or – as in most cases – behind the glove compartment. This filter is designed to prevent allergens and other irritants from passing through the air vents and into the air that you and your passengers inhale.

Eventually, however, even the best air filters will either get clogged up or degrade with age. When that happens, you need to replace yours to ensure fresh air flows as it should.

How to Spot Bad Air Filters

Signs of failure include:

  • Misfiring engine
  • Weak throttle response
  • Worsening fuel economy
  • Strange engine noises
  • Musty smelling cabin
  • Inconsistent cabin temperature
  • Increased exhaust emissions
  • "Check Engine" dash light comes on

Check your air filters regularly. You can expect them to last for between 12,000 and 15,000 miles before needing to be replaced, though higher quality filters may protect longer. Check your owner's manual to determine your recommended maintenance schedule.
