Belts and Hoses
My Garage
No matter which model you drive, your Land Rover SUV has belts and hoses that work hard to keep parts and systems running smoothly and efficiently. Some, like your HVAC system, rely on both.
Types of Belts
There are three, not including your seat belts. Your timing belt is the notched belt that helps your crankshaft rotate the camshaft, synchronizing the movement of the valves and pistons. A serpentine belt works with the tensioner, idler pulley, and crank pulley to move parts like the alternator and power steering. Drive belts run off the crank pulley to help move your water pump, radiator fan, and many other parts.
What Hoses Do
Hoses route fluids to and from parts in order to either lubricate or cool them. For example, your radiator sends coolant to your engine to keep from overheating. The engine then returns the hot fluid to the radiator. This is all done through a network of inlet and outlet hoses.
How to Detect Issues with Your Belts or Hoses
You'll want to check your belts and hoses regularly to ensure that they're in good condition, since failure can cause problems as serious as an immediate shutdown. Signs to look for include:
- Slack or loose belts
- Belts that are overly tight
- Frayed belt edges
- Cracked hose material
- Pools of liquid underneath your vehicle
- Shrill noises from under your hood
