The shifter is mounted either to the floor or on the steering column, and it goes by several names -- gear knob, gear shift knob, stick shift knob, and gear stick, to name just some of them. What the knob does, though, is pretty simple: it provides a better grip on the stick than just a bare lever, and it displays both the gears you can shift to and the corresponding direction (pattern) to shift in; you grab it, step on the clutch (if your SUV's transmission is manual) and pull the shifter accordingly.
